San Domenico church is one of the oldest in Trapani. It was built by will of Giacomo d'Aragona in 1289 as a little chapel and enlarged in XIV c. with a monastery. The new church had first been consecrated to Santa Maria La Nova.
The church, which stands with the former monastery in the square bearing the same name, has very old origin.
It was founded in 1272 by the Franciscan friar Angelo da Rieti, on one of the little islands in front of the ancient town, called Isola delle Vergini, and in the nearby of the Alexandrian consulate. The building was built again in the second half of XVI c. and works lasted until 1638.
