The church stands on the higher place of the town and was built in the late XIII c.
San Domenico church is one of the oldest in Trapani. It was built by will of Giacomo d'Aragona in 1289 as a little chapel and enlarged in XIV c. with a monastery. The new church had first been consecrated to Santa Maria La Nova.

The new church had first been consecrated to Santa Maria La Nova. In 1318 Federico III wanted there a funeral chapel for is son Manfredi who died as a child falling while riding a horse.
The front stil shows the old rose window frame which was a Chiaramontano Gothic work. The former building had had a single aisle and ten side chapels of wchich we can admire only the apse. The bell tower is from the XIII c.
The monastery had two cloisters ornated with columns. between the apse and the bell tower ther is the Crusaders' Chapel with its frescoes from XIV and XV c.. A Baroque Chapel by Giovanni Biagio Amico, with colored marbles was added in XVIIIc. it preserves a wooden Crucifix form XIIIc. This last with apainting by Andrea Carreca and a Fresco from XIV are preserved in this old church.
