San Francesco d'Assisi Church
The church, which stands with the former monastery in the square bearing the same name, has very old origin.
It was founded in 1272 by the Franciscan friar Angelo da Rieti, on one of the little islands in front of the ancient town, called Isola delle Vergini, and in the nearby of the Alexandrian consulate. The building was built again in the second half of XVI c. and works lasted until 1638.

It was founded in 1272 by the Franciscan friar Angelo da Rieti, on one of the little islands in front of the ancient town, called Isola delle Vergini, and in the nearby of the Alexandrian consulate. The building was built again in the second half of XVI c. and works lasted until 1638. The architect Giovanni Biagio Amico ornated the main door using a classical taste. The church plan has a Latin cross shape with a single aisle and preserves a wondeful statue of the Madonna di Loreto (1491) probably the best work by the sculptor Domenico Gagini. The wide and white aisle shows a considerable display of plasters and other architectonical elements among which the really expressive images of Maria, Giovanni and the Magdalen by the artisan Gabriele Messina, which are at the feet of a wooden Crucifix on the main altar.
At the entrance there is a two-side opening porch with gates. The powerful dome covered with colored tiles stands among two more little domes which guests the clock's bells and the church's bells. In side on the walls and next to the choir, 11 statues by the Trapanese Cristoforo Milanti, create a public with many a symbolic meaning since they represent moral virtues. Fortitude, Zeal, Charity, Knowledge, Erudition, Meekness, Humbleness, Alms, Eloquence, Perseverance and Prudence. To each image is linked a picture representing a religious character who had been an example of that virtue.
The monastery door was one of the best work of Giovanni Biagio Amico, it was a very industrious institution in Trapani and guested 36 friars.
