The Impossible rampart

An impressive fortress from XVIc.

It's the south-east part of the city walls built as a defense against pirates.

The Rampart was an impressive part of the city walls and closed the town on its south-east side. It had been built in the Spanish era and probably its name is due only to the renowned arrogance of the Spanish army, anyway historians think that Impossible was trying to  break in through it or that had been Impossible its building itself, since the place all around was a pool. The fortress was built in the first half of the XVI c. with hewn sandstones and other tufaceous limestone stuff. On the top of the building, facing the sea, there had probably been several cannons and a long parapet built in order to hide the soldiers during their recon. Another higher building on the top could have been a sort of sentry box. The entrance on the west wall is shown by some arches that are now under the ground level.
