The fish market square

The fish market in the very centre of Trapani has been for ages lively picture of common Sicilian life.

Outside the town walls crossed Porta Felice, a natural open space facing the sea had already been used as a market place. The same door was called also Porta Bocceria - after the French word boucherie - since in the nearby there was a building where the livestock was butchered.

The same door was called also Porta Bocceria - after the French word boucherie - since in the nearby there was a building where the livestock was butchered. In 1874 Giovan Battista Talotti projected and built a  tall porch with round arches in order to close the area and preserve it from winds during the trades. at the centre of the square there is a little fountain with a statue of Venus the Anadiomene -Aphrodite- coming out from the sea waters.
