The Dry-land Castle
An old middle-ages fortress in the very centre of Trapani
Together with the Castle over the sea, a Colombaia, and so named since it completes the town walls, it was part of the fortification built against the pirates' raids. You can see what's left at the point where the sea of Tramontana met the port, throughout a chanel.
The castle was built in XII c. on a Carthaginian fortress ruin that had been built by Amilcare Barca. It was on the mouth of the channel linking the Tyrrhenian Sea with the port and it closed the town on the far side of the Castle over the sea. It was enlarged by Giacomo II Aragonese. In XVII c. Bourbons used it as barracks. In '70s some of its rooms went torn down in order to build the police headquarters, but, in 1992 it came to a higher regard as a historic monument and partially restored. In fact it preserves an archeological site from the V - IIIc. b. C. with Punic amphoras and middle-ages tiles. Its plan is squared and has half round towers along the walls beside the towers on the corners. The building included lodgings for the troops and several storing rooms. In 1673 the "learned counsel in laws" Gerolamo Fardella, who had lead the farmers revolt against the rising of corn's price, was beheaded in the jails of the Castle.
