Santa Maria dell'Ittrio church

It was built on another older church's foundations and is a significative example of Sicilian Baroque.

Commonly known under the name of Santa Rita church, it preserves Santa Rita da Cascia relics besides those of Brother Santo from San Domenico. In 1621 the Augustinian Friar was given the church and promised to build an oratory next to it and to keep it consecrated to Santa Maria dell'Itria.

It was built on another older church's foundations and is a significative example of Sicilian Baroque.  The church is commonly known under the name of Santa Rita church, it preserves Santa Rita da Cascia relics besides those of Brother Santo from San Domenico. In 1621 the Augustinian Friar was given the church and promised to build an oratory next to it and to keep it consecrated to Santa Maria dell'Itria. The church underwent a renovation in XVII c.. The plan has got three aisles and the front, finished only in 1745 by Pietro Castro, shows two different levels, the first one has got two  empty niches between Corinthian columns; while a large windows opens on the second level just over the main door. The Tympanum completion shows the Sant'Augustin anchorets' escutcheon. Today the monastery next to the church houses the school-rooms of a lyceum. The church preserves works of art by Carreca, Novelli, De Felice e Tipa the author of the sculpture group representing the Holy Family made of wood, glue and canvas which stands on the high altar.
