Sant'Anna Rampart - also Imperial Rampart
The town walls on the point with a double exposure.
Nearby Ligny tower, the rampart stands on the Tramontana seaside. It was built in order to close the entrance to the town by the will of the emperor Carlo V in 1545. It had been later enlarged until in 1673 it became as we can appreciate it now.
The Rampart had been conceived in order to strengthen the town walls and preserve the town itself against pirates' raids in XVIc. Most of these defense building had been a project by the engineer Ferramolino. On the east side there were The land Castle and the Impossible Rampart, while on the west side were built Sant'Anna and Sant'Andrea Ramparts, the last had been nearby the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church and the Dogana Rampart had been behind the present touristic port, these together with San' Giacomo bulwark and Conca Rampart went torn down when, in 1863, they were considered a useless obstruct to the people movements. Sant'Anna Rampart was built on the north-west corner of the town walls, with hewn sandstones. It has slanted walls and a large roof conceived for the guards who could walked on it protected by impressive merlons. The Rampart was even used as a jail and had a special underground room for prisoners, besides the executioner's room. Outside, on the wall facing today later buildings, we can still admire the Bourbon's emblems.
