The Cathedral is the most important Catholic-worship site in Trapani
Built under the will of Alfonso il Magnanimo in 1492, it has been frequently modified until 1700 when the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico realized the last project.
Our Cathedral had been built first in 1421 as a common church and only in 1844 San Lorenzo became the bishop's palace and cathedral in according to the will of Pope Gregorio XVI. During the period between it underwent many a change and its present look is that reached in the XVII c. following the project made by the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico. P. Two raws of columns divide the Cathedral in three aisles and the central dome is bordered by other little four. There are several really interesting paintings in the Cathedral as for instance: the Crucifixion by Van Dick, Saint George by Carreca, the Eternal by Domenico La Bruna and a statue representing the Dead Christ by Giacomo Tartaglia. The front of the Cathedral is Baroque and its Pronao is made up of three spans each corresponding with a round arch opening outside. The gate which closes the Pronao has been a work in bronze and wrought iron by Ennio Tesei in 1990. The upper part of the front without any completion shows at its right a bell-tower with its peak covered by coloured majolicas. There are two Organs the first one is a pipe organ from 1967 by Rufattis', while the second one at the left hand in the trassept, was built in 2008 by Ciminos'.
