The church was a project by the architect Pietro Castro and it has been built in 1688. Giovanni Biagio Amico modified the front in 1712 who asked on it the 12 plastered-stone statues representing the Apostles by Alberto Orlando.

Giovanni Biagio Amico modified the front in 1712 who asked on it the 12 plastered-stone statues representing the Apostles by Alberto Orlando. The plan has a Latin cross shape and it's divided into three aisles. Inside the church are preserved 20 statue groups each on its wooden base. These are the Mysteries representing Jesus Christ's Via Crucis and are strongly worshipped during a pilgrimage which lasts a full day on the holy Friday in Easter. The pilgrimage involves the whole population since it is the main folkloristic and Catholic tradition celebrated in Trapani.
