Zingaro Natural Preserve

A long stretch of the Sicilian most untainted and pure coastline

Zingaro Natural Preserve stretches from Capo San Vito to Castellammare del Golfo. The coast is a sedimentary rocks one rich in calcium and magnesium and pertaining to the Mesozoic era. This particular kind of rock join the sea with several little bays, that you can reach along the natural paths throughout the preserve. No car is allowed.All around the typical macchia mediterranea, makes the place a little paradise full of green, rabbits, foxes, urchins and hedgehogs live in the preserve. Even the sea just opposite the whole area, gained its untainted life thanks to the preserve: there are several restrictions and limitations to issues of fishing and shipping in order to preserve the reproduction of submarine fauna and flora specimen.

This line of land had been lived already in neolitico era, there are evidences of it among the excavation in 'Uzzo cave. Olive, almond and ash groves together with ancient vineyards and fruits trees are remains of a lively farming life. In the preserve there are several rural building nowadays guesting exhibitions on local handicraft, on the traditional Tuna-fishing and on prehistory founding. Baglio Cusenza was a small rural village that guested 14 families who left this place only at the beginning of XXc.
The Chamaerops humbles is the preserve's symbol and was, together with the Ampelodesma the main source of income. It had been used as feedstock in order to weave, bags, ropes, hats, brooms, fans and mats. Its leaves were sold all around Europe. The Ampedesma was largely used in the tuna ground and woven in fishing nets. The preserve, in fact, arranges even weave classes where natural fibre are the main stuff.
