Theme Park Museum Calcara Salt-Works
Calcara Salt-Work sums up Trapanese history.
The very little island Calcara has been one among others that numbered the front of Trapanese coast, Drepanum. It was the first landing place people coming from sea found once in this area that had been made up of pools and bogs. In 1604 six little islands were linked in order to reinforce the town's walls.
The very little island Calcara has been one among others that numbered the front of Trapanese coast, Drepanum. The other were Ronciglio, Zavorra, Bassa, Colombaia e Lazzaretto. It was the first landing place people coming from sea found once in this area that had been made up of pools and bogs. People who lived the nearby lands used this very place to meet and exchange stuff and products with tradesmen coming from the sea. In 1604 six little islands were linked in order to reinforce the town's walls and a pentagonal fortress should have been built up. Now the island are included in the coast and linked together except the Calcara and the Colombaia. The Theme Park Museum it's inside the Natural preserve of Saltworks. Historical reports tell us about the existence of a tower and of a little church consecrated to Sant' Alessio on the island. The building that had been used by salt-workers is now a museum together with its old mill. The Museum includes the open space all nearby with several pools, and white mountains of salt. Skilled guides will lead the visitors throughout the stages of this old and traditional activity.
