Salt-works' Nature Reserve in Trapani and Paceco

As you walk along the narrow paths among the salt works in Trapani, the only sounds you are able to appreciate are those of the sea-waves and of the sea-galls. You'll be surrounded by horizons made of salt mountains and flying birds. The Nature Reserve "Saline di Trapani e Paceco" was established in 1995 and is directed by WWF Italia. It is made up of two different areas: 700 hectares of salt works pools and the rest of macchia mediterranea. These areas, being the perfect habitat for several endemic species, is subjected to strict rules in order to be preserved and has gained the title of "Internationally significative site". In fact the pools which collected the salt have been worked in the same traditional way, since ages and even if are mainly an artificial area, they have gathered all the elements useful to keep an extraordinary biodiversity which includes micro-biologial life and many a species of birds. Salt works are the very perfect place chosen by thousands of birds which need to rest during their migration flights, and for some of them is perfect even when they have to nest. We have counted 208 different species among which Flamingos, the White Heron, Moor Buzzards, Kingfishers and many others. Among the fishes there is the Aphanius Fasciatus, there have been counted besides several different endemic insects and a little crustacea the Artemia which in Europe find its habitat exclusively here.
