The Satiro Danzante Museum
The Sicilian Canal sunken inheritance.
A precious and accident finding brought to the surface by the crew of a fishing vessel in 1998. The bronze statue represents a pointed-ears young dancing satyr, probably parte of a statue group of an orgiastic procession that followed Dionysus.
Saint Egidio Church in Mazara del vallo, houses one of the most fashinating archaelogical findings that tell us the cultural and commercial exchange history in the Mediterranean sea: the dancing satyr. The church from the XIV c. shows the typical Arabian- Norman architecture. The statue came there in 2005. In 1997 the left leg had already been found while the body, without its arms was found the year after. Extensive restorations occurred at the Central Restoration Institute of Rome. The statue incredible charm is due to its ecstatic look while dancing. Experts consider it is a work from the IVc. b.C. by an unknown artist who had attended the Prassitele school. Beside the satyr, the museum shows several findings that came forth from the Sicilian Canal, among them: the bronze shard of an elephant leg from the Punic-Roman era and a bronze pot from the middle-ages; several are even the amphoras, besides there are two iron cannons and Corinthian capitals which had been in Torretta Granitola.
