The church and its monastery were already named among the Franciscan institutions' list in 1334. The church gathered a deal of christians so that a whole district was called San Francesco in XV c.. It underwent a strong renovation at the beginning of XVIII due to the well known work of the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico.

The front shows two different level thanks to a string-course frame; the stately main door has a broken gable which has at is top an aedicul housing the statue of San Francesco. The sigle aisle, inside, has a very high dome and a short transept characterized by white plasters with black outlines. Guesting several works of art, the church is considered as not less than the Mother Church in Marsala. A 1492 statue of the Madonna di Loreto by Domenico Gagini finds its place in the first chapel on the left, while a wooden Crucifix from XVI c. is a work by Benedetto Valenza.
