The church had been formerly built in 1691 as Madonna del Fulmine Church and only later, in 1770, consecrated to the Madonna Addolarota. The plan, originally rectangular, became round and the main door was opened on the Addolorata little square. The architectural works were by Pietro Russo and were finished in 1790.

The precious wooden statue representing the Madonna Addolorata, was hand worked by an anonimus officer of the time together with Priest Donato who painted it and covered it with papier-mache dresses. The beautifull silk and gold mantle was added only in the late XIXc.. Still nowadays the statue is strongly worshipped and followed by faithful Christians on the easter holy Friday.
