Mother-Church - Marsala
Built in 1628, it has a Baroque style.
It was built in 1628 on a previous Norman church, probably consecrated to Thomas Becket the bishop of Canterbury. The front is in part Manneristic-Baroque with twin columns and vigorous parastades. The main door is a very delicate example of Baroque.
It was built in 1628 on a previous Norman church, probably consecrated to Thomas Becket the bishop of Canterbury. The front is in part Manieristical-Baroque with twin columns and vigorous parastades. The main door is a very delicate example of Baroque. The upper level of the front has been completed only in 1956 and it guests four statues representing San Giovanni Battista and Thomas Becket on the left of the big window, while at its right there are the statues of Leone Magno and Gregorio Magno. The wide hall is divided into three large aisles and has a basilical plan with marble columns, a transept and a very high dome. Several are the works of art there preserved: the marble statue of san Tommaso by Antonello Gagini the Madonna del Popolo by Domenico Gagini, the marble icon in the SS Sacramento chapel by Bartolomeo Berettaro and Antonello Gagini, and the picture by Antonello Riccio representing the Presentation at the Temple.
