Flemish Tapestries Museum

The museum pertains to the Curia in Marsala. It preserves a group of eight Flemish tapestries from the XVI c.

The Flemish tapestries were given to the Mother Church of Marsala in 1589 by Mgr Antonio Lombardo who had probably received them as a gift from the queen of Spain.

The Flemish tapestries were given to the Mother Church of Marsala in 1589 by Mgr Antonio Lombardo who had probably received them as a gift from the queen of Spain. They show a fine texture made of silk and mohair and are the charming work of Corneil Tons a famous embroiderer from Bruxelles whose production was delivered to the public between 1550 and 1575. These wonderful works copy from the paper by the Flemish painter Peter De Kempeneer who came in Italy with Polidoro da Caravaggio.  The tapestries are framed with flower, fruits and other symbolic images and represent eight scenes of the fight between  Jews and Romans who  both wanted  the town of Jerusalem.
