Crispia Salvia Hypogaeum

An old funeral home

Crispia Salvia hypogaeum was found by chance in 1994. It had been a Punic burial room for sure and it was use for the same purpose yet during the late Roman era by palaeo-Christians as well as by Jews and pagans.

Crispia Salvia hypogaeum was found by chance in 1994. It had been a Punic burial room for sure and it was use for the same purpose yet during the late Roman era by the early Christian one, as well as by Jews and pagans.
It is an underground burial room with six graves that you reach throughout a dromos- a long hallway- ending with ten steps of rough stone. The room's plan is trapezoidal and the graves are dug on the walls. On the higher part of the walls there are paintings representing the feisty scenes of a banquet with musicians, dancers, peacocks and five men who dance for a sitting woman. The third grave facing the entrance should have been for a very important one since above it are painted two winged images bringing a red wreath and a Latin inscription from the II c. A.D. with the name of Crispa Salvia.
