Santa Caterina Castle
A fortress over the sea
The fortress had been built by Saracens and changed in castle by Ruggero in XIIc., it underwent several changes in the following centuries. On the top of the higher point in the island, it became a jail. Besides its historic interest, the castle is the perfect place where get wonderful landscapes.
The former watchtower built by Saracens was changed in castle by Ruggero I d'Altavilla. Under the Swabian dominion it was given to Palmerio Abate and for a long period after it was a property of his family. In 1400 Santa Caterina Castle was built again with local limestones leaving the projections on the four corners which remind the previous towers. The ground floor was half underground and used as a jail. On the first floor there were the garrison's vaulted rooms and a little chapel consecrated to Santa Caterina. There is a ditch all along the front of the building so it is thought there had been a drawbridge Several windows and loopholes opened on the walls. Upon the main door on the right there was the Aragonese coat of arms. In 1860 the fortress had been partially destroyed and after the second world war Santa Caterina Castle was commandeered by the naval army.
