It had been erected in 1070 following the will of Ruggero the Norman and the Saint to whom it was consecrated is always represented warrior like swore in hand and followed by a falcon since is believed he had died fighting the Musilms entering in Erice. He was called the Redeemer and became the patron saint of the town. The church followed former the Gothic style and later was built again between 1612 and 1615 and adorned with plasters by Pietro dell'Orto. It was even enlarged and got a three aisles and Basilical plan. The main door is from the Renaissance Era and the outer bell tower, with its peculiar pagoda roof was built in 1770. In 1914, become crumbling, lost its role of parish church. The whole of its little treasure of vestments and furnishings were brought to San Rocco instutute and kept by the nuns of San Vincenzo dei Paoli.
